Our Nutrition & Wellness students have been learning about kitchen equipment and exploring deep frying as a method of food preparation. For this unit’s hands-on cooking lab, they put their skills to the test by creating Fair Food Favorites—Bloomin’ Onions, Funnel Cakes, Fried Snickers, Fried Oreos, and Fresh Shaken Lemonade! 🎡✨
This lab connected directly to the National Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences Education:
🔪 Standard 8.5.1 – Demonstrating professional skills in safe handling of knives, tools, and equipment.
🔥 Standard 8.5.2 – Demonstrating professional skill in a variety of cooking methods, including deep frying, using professional equipment and current technologies.
We’re proud of our students for mastering both safety and creativity in the kitchen—and for bringing the flavors of the fair right into our classroom! 🎉

🌊 They experimented with chloroform and methanol to observe density differences—chloroform, denser than water, sank and stayed separate, while methanol, although it floated initially, became miscible when mixed.
⚗️ Then came the exciting reactants lab! Using iodine, hydrogen peroxide, and starch, they witnessed a delayed but dramatic reaction—suddenly turning the solution dark blue in a surprise color change once the reactants kicked in.
What an electrifying start to the year in the lab! 💥
