The Welding Technology program at North Central Career Center offers students hands-on, industry-based training that prepares them for careers in both shop and field welding environments. Students can enroll in Introduction to Welding Technology, Welding Technology I, and Welding Technology II, gaining both foundational and advanced skills needed for entry-level employment in the welding industry.
Throughout the block welding classes, students receive training in essential areas such as:
- Welding safety and industry standards
- Four welding processes: SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW
- Cutting processes including OFC and PAC
- Blueprint reading, welding symbol interpretation, and isometric pipe drawings
- Proper joint preparation, alignment, and fit-up
- Working with ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and aluminum
- Destructive and non-destructive examination practices
- Testing methods aligned with AWS D1.1 structural welding code
Accelerated learners also have the opportunity to receive advanced pipe welding training in accordance with ASME Section 9, ASME B31.1, and ASME B31.3 welding codes, further preparing them for specialized career pathways.
Zeb Cook assists Mrs. Cas as a SkillsUSA program advisor, providing students with opportunities to compete, earn certifications, and showcase their skills. Contest season begins January 30, 2026, with planned participation in competitions hosted by Missouri Welding Institute, Grand River Welding Institute, Iron Eagle Welding Academy, district SkillsUSA events, and possible American Welding Academy events. Certification testing will take place at the end of the school year.
Recent graduates of the Welding Technology program are already finding success in the workforce and postsecondary training. Alumni are currently employed with companies such as Altec, Rinehart Pipe and Steel, and UPG Ventures, while others are completing advanced training at Missouri Welding Instituteโa true testament to how CTE at NCCC prepares students for high-demand, real-world careers.
