🩺 National CTE Month Spotlight: Health Occupations at NCCC 🩺
The Health Occupations program at North Central Career Center prepares students for entry-level positions and continued education in the healthcare field by building both hands-on patient-care skills and essential soft skills. Students learn vital skills such as:
- Measuring vital signs
- Infection control and safety standards
- Emergency response
- Medical terminology and documentation
- Effective patient communication
These real-world skills help students feel confident and prepared as they take their next steps into healthcare careers.
Students in the program will have the opportunity to earn their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification when testing takes place in April, providing a strong foundation for immediate employment or further education in healthcare.
Even in just her second year of teaching, Mrs. Carrol has already seen student success beyond NCCC. One standout alumna, Griffin Smith, is currently serving as President of the LPN Program at NCMC and has earned additional scholarships while continuing her education. Griffin consistently demonstrated a caring heart, empathy, and leadership in the classroom—qualities that have clearly carried over into her college and career journey.
Preparing compassionate, skilled, and career-ready healthcare professionals—this is CTE in action at NCCC. 💙

🔨 National CTE Month Spotlight: Carpentry at NCCC 🔨
Students in the Carpentry program at North Central Career Center get hands-on, real-world experience building homes from the ground up! Under the instruction of Eric Sweat, students in Construction Technology 1 spend three-hour blocks working at the project house, learning everything from residential framing, roofing, siding, and drywall to window/door installation, cabinets, trim, and paint.
Fourth-hour students in Intro to Carpentry focus on home improvement projects, power tool safety, and small shop projects, building the skills they’ll use in real-life construction work. Along the way, students also get exposure to other trades like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical—preparing them for a variety of career paths.
Many former students have gone on to become professional carpenters in the area and beyond, showing how CTE at NCCC creates career-ready graduates with real-world skills. Students also have the opportunity to participate in SkillsUSA, the Career & Technical student leadership organization, with competitions coming up next month!

🔧 National CTE Month Spotlight: Welding Technology at NCCC 🔧
The Welding Technology program at North Central Career Center offers students hands-on, industry-based training that prepares them for careers in both shop and field welding environments. Students can enroll in Introduction to Welding Technology, Welding Technology I, and Welding Technology II, gaining both foundational and advanced skills needed for entry-level employment in the welding industry.
Throughout the block welding classes, students receive training in essential areas such as:
- Welding safety and industry standards
- Four welding processes: SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW
- Cutting processes including OFC and PAC
- Blueprint reading, welding symbol interpretation, and isometric pipe drawings
- Proper joint preparation, alignment, and fit-up
- Working with ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and aluminum
- Destructive and non-destructive examination practices
- Testing methods aligned with AWS D1.1 structural welding code
Accelerated learners also have the opportunity to receive advanced pipe welding training in accordance with ASME Section 9, ASME B31.1, and ASME B31.3 welding codes, further preparing them for specialized career pathways.
Zeb Cook assists Mrs. Cas as a SkillsUSA program advisor, providing students with opportunities to compete, earn certifications, and showcase their skills. Contest season begins January 30, 2026, with planned participation in competitions hosted by Missouri Welding Institute, Grand River Welding Institute, Iron Eagle Welding Academy, district SkillsUSA events, and possible American Welding Academy events. Certification testing will take place at the end of the school year.
Recent graduates of the Welding Technology program are already finding success in the workforce and postsecondary training. Alumni are currently employed with companies such as Altec, Rinehart Pipe and Steel, and UPG Ventures, while others are completing advanced training at Missouri Welding Institute—a true testament to how CTE at NCCC prepares students for high-demand, real-world careers.

Proud of these students for representing North Central Career Center and their sending schools at Missouri Welding Institute’s 16th Annual Senior Welding Competition. 🔥
From left to right: Dylan Lewis (Mercer), Samantha Berry (South Harrison), Logan Cornelison (South Harrison), and Dustin Hamilton (North Harrison).
While no placements were awarded this year, all four students completed their projects within the allotted time and welded them out correctly. That speaks to the preparation and effort they put into this contest. We appreciate the hard work and commitment they showed throughout the process.
North Central Career Center also received a $2,000 raffle giveaway during the event. 💰
Great experience and a solid showing for our program.
