Course Description

This course introduces the terminology of Algebra and the basic skills necessary to work with unknowns represented by letters.  Emphasis is placed on the mastery of these skills.  Topics such as solving equations, solving systems of linear equations, algebraic fractions, factoring, graphing linear equations, radicals, and exponents are thoroughly covered.  The course is of great benefit for those students planning to attend college or taking advanced science courses.  It is strongly recommended that a student receive a “B-“ or better both semesters as a prerequisite for Geometry, Algebra II, Computer Science and Physics.

 

Algebra I Rationale

“Learning to learn” is one of the most important things all students need to do in high school.  In an ever-changing world, we are constantly required to learn new concepts and skills in order to remain employable and function using modern technology.  Algebra I is a yearlong exercise in training the mind to learn concepts and processes that seem unusual or different at first.  Algebra I also introduces the elementary algebraic skills which nearly everyone will need since nearly everyone now is exposed to expanding technology.

Recommended: 8th grade math or appropriate sequence of Applied math

Textbook – Glencoe Mathematics Algebra I

3-ring Binder (at least 2 inch recommended)

3-ring pocket (recommended for storage of supplies)

5 Tab dividers

Pencils

RED pen for grading

Paper (loose leaf for binder is recommended)

Scientific Calculator (TI-30x or Casio fx260 recommended)

Course Expectations

  • Bring your book to class each day.
  • Bring your notebook to class each day.
    • Students will be required to keep notes, homework, and quizzes in a 3-ring binder (notebook).
  • Homework
    • Assignments are accepted on the day that they are due.
    • Work is due at the beginning of class the next time the class meets or as otherwise stated.
    • No Name Papers – Papers that do not have a name on them, as they are being recorded, will receive a 0.
    • Papers that possess only answers (shows no work) will receive a 0.
  • Once you enter the classroom you may not leave until dismissed.  If you have errands, take care of them before you enter the classroom.
    • Classroom tardy policy will follow that of the student handbook.  Along with being late to class, tardies will also be given to students who are not prepared for class.

 

Classroom Discipline

Students will be given one warning for any disruptions or inappropriate behavior depending on the severity.  After the warning the result of continuous misbehavior is a one-hour detention that will be served with the classroom teacher and/or placement on the office’s Behavior Management Plan.

  • Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom.  Confiscated devices will be taken to the office.

Methods of Assessment

  • Homework will be graded in one of the following ways.
    • Points Possible – Grade all of the assignment and take the number of points correct out of the total amount (most commonly used).
    • Completion – Grade based on the logical effort of the problem and number of problems completed correctly.
  • Quizzes will be given throughout all chapters.
  • Weekly Review:
    • Consists of problems that review basic math skills as well as any skill learned in the previous weeks.
    • Will be handed out the first day of the week and will be due the last day of the week.
    • The number of problems will vary (up to 20) depending on the difficulty and the number of days in the week.
  • Mid – Chapter tests are given half way through the chapter.
  • Chapter tests are given at the completion of the chapter.
  • Semester Finals are given at the end of each semester and are cumulative over everything taught that semester.  Semester finals are worth 10% of the semester grade.
    • End-of-Course Exams (MAP test) will be given as the final for the second semester and are worth 10% of the semester grade.

Make-up Work & Late Assignments

  • Absent –
    • Students that are absent are expected to turn in the assignment that was due the day they missed on the day that they return to school.  Students are allowed 2 days per absence to make up work as per the student handbook.  Any work not make up during the two days will result in zeros.
      • Students are responsible for obtaining an Admit slip from the office and presenting it to the teacher on the day of their return.  Tardies will be given to students who come to class without their Admit slip.
    • Attendance Policy as quoted from the district handbook…
      • “Students are allowed 8 absences for the school year.  When the student reaches the 8th absence, any additional absence will be considered unexcused and no make-up work will be allowed, unless the student presents a doctor’s note upon return to school.”
        • Students may also submit a written appeal to the attendance committee for review.
  • School Absence –
    • Students that are absent for school activities are responsible for getting their homework assignment.  The assignment is due at the same time as the rest of the class.  The student is responsible for turning in any make-up work and will not be asked for it.

 

Student Information & Grades

Student information and grades can be viewed through a portal found on South Harrison’s web page.  Directions and log-on information may be obtained by a parent or guardian from the high school principal’s office.

  • Grade sheets will be given to students periodically throughout the year.  Students are encouraged to double check their grades.

 

Course Outline

This is a listing of the Class Level Expectations (CLE’s) from the state and the section in which they are met.

 

SEMESTER 1

  • NO1A -  compare and order rational and irrational numbers, including finding their approximate locations on a number line. (section: 2-1)
  • NO1B -  use real numbers and various models, drawings, etc. to solve problems (section: 2-1)
  • NO1C -  use a variety of representations to demonstrate an understanding of very large and very small numbers (sections: Ch. 2 & 8-3)
  • NO2B - describe the effects of operations, such as multiplication, division, and computing powers and roots on the magnitude of quantities (section: 2-3)
  • NO2D -  apply operations to real numbers, using mental computation or paper-and-pencil calculations for simple cases and technology for more complicated cases (sections: Chapter 2, all)
  • NO3D -  judge the reasonableness of numerical computations and their results (sections: all)
  • NO3E - solve problems involving proportions (section: 3-6)
  • AR1B -  generalize patterns using explicitly or recursively defined functions (sections: 4-7 & 4-8)
  • AR1C -  compare and contrast various forms of representations of patterns (section: 4-8)
  • AR1D -  understand and compare the properties of linear and nonlinear functions (sections 4-5)
